After many months of preparations, the races of the twentieth edition of the Transgrancanaria HG® are starting this week. Over four thousand participants will meet at the Gran Canaria Island in order to confront one of the best trailrunning competitions in the world. As usual, the list of favourites is a real luxury, with the best international runners being present.
Since quite a while the race has become a huge global event, but this year Transgrancanaria HG® is making a one more step thanks to becoming a “Bonus Series” race in the popular Ultra-Trail World Tour. This category is only shared with the legendary Ultra-Trail du Montblanc, and gives to the participants the maximum score at the ranking of the tour. Thus the elite of the world trailrunning will join these days in Maspalomas in order to prepare for the race that starts on Friday 11 PM local time.
Pau Capell is without doubt the major favourite for the win. This Catalan runner has made Transgrancanaria HG its preferred race and this might be his third consecutive win – if he manages to be the fastest in 128km. Nevertheless this year it will be complicated. At the start line – on the legendary beach Las Canteras – next to him will be such runners as North American Hayden Hawks (3rd best runner according to ITRA), Gomeran Cristofer Clemente (current world’s runner-up), Russian Dimitry Mityaev, Latvia Andris Ronimoiss, Lithuanian Vaidas Zlabys or the Chinese Min Qi. Miao Yao will be landing at Canary Islands as well – this young Chinese runner astonished trailrunning world with her devastating win at the past CCC of UTMB. She will be the main favourite for the win, even more so considering that Caroline Chaverot or Azara Garcia will not be participating this time. Main rivals of Yao are Canadian Marianne Hogan, Brazilian Fernanda Maciel, Polish Magadalena Laczak and North American Kaytlyn Gerbin.
Amongst the Spanish representation, besides Capell and Clemente, will be present HG AML team runners Sebas Sanchez, Victor Bernad and David Lutzardo – who already know how to perform nicely at the Transgrancanaria HG.
Pablo Vila, Ernest Ausiro, Aroa Sio o Leticia Bullido from Spanish National team will be there, as well.
Despite the great expectations of the Friday’s race, Transgrancanaria HG program offers so much more. This Wednesday the wild Tans 360º is starting – 264km of non-stop. On Friday there is also the marathon starting at El Garañón – it being a scoring option for the Spanish trail team RFEA, a lot of important Spanish representatives of the mountain running will be there: Pablo Villalobos, Eugeni Gil, Antonio Martinez or Efren Segundo and Monica Vives (HG AML Team), Monica Comas and Marta Molist.
With the queen race of 128km already on-going, Saturday will also take place the Advanced modality – expecting Ivan Camps, Andre Rodrigues, Dominique van Mechgelen or Cinzia Bertasa. The same day Starter and Promo (with Sheila Aviles and Chema Martinez) will take place, as well as family races. Finally, Sunday at midday the official awards ceremony will take place at Maspalomas – marking the end of a week full of races, ceremonies and strong emotions at this Canary Island.
